Top management of Czech Aeroholding, the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic, the Security Intelligence Service, the Military Intelligence Section of the Ministry of Defence and the Office for Foreign Relations and Information signed a ‘Memorandum on Collaboration to Increase Security at Vaclav Havel Airport Prague”. It was the first step in implementing the ‘Project to Increase Security at Václav Havel Airport Prague’.
The project aims to increase the airport’s security standard, combining existing potential with the use of new technology and integrating the superstructure into the system for managing security risks. The project is being implemented in line with the airport’s development strategy.
The emphasis will be on joint procedures to be carried out by security agencies at the airport, with the goal of combating new trends and novel threats from international terrorism. The camera system will be improved and other security warning systems will be integrated. Improvements will also be made in authorization checks of people entering the airport’s restricted areas, in securing the external border around the airport, in the joint training of airport and security staff, and in the system for detecting radioactivity. Checks for suspicious items and dangerous chemical substances will also be upgraded.
Prague Airport set several goals for its security strategy to be met in keeping with the memorandum over the next two years. “Our security standards are on a good level but we wish to continue to heighten them. We wish to attain a higher level by introducing the latest technology, which will improve effectiveness of security processes. We greatly look forward to working with the Police of the CR and the Customs Administration in ensuring airport security and providing training for security staff. This will allow us to automatize the interconnection among security system outputs and improving the quality of the strategic ability of the airport’s Security Service in individual tasks. And finally, emergency and crisis planning and process management for emergency situations and non-standard operational situations will be unified,” said Václav Řehoř, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Czech Aeroholding, the exclusive shareholder of Prague Airport company.
As part of the project, the Police of the CR will provide members of security units with protection against ballistic projectiles, such as ballistic helmets and vests. This will allow all police on the scene to immediately eliminate attackers with no undue delay. A state-of-the-art laser shooting range will also be constructed. “Being able to shoot precisely with a firearm in an airport environment is very specific and demanding. And because of the necessary effectiveness and precision, the conditions for target practice must be improved. The new shooting range will allow us to simulate all areas of the airport including terminals, check-in counters, and public and restricted areas. The police will thus be able to practice under realistic conditions,” said Brig Gen Tomáš Tuhý, the Police President.
