We are delighted to announce that two important artworks – the Reliquary Bust of a Female Saint from Jezeří and the Processional Cross – have returned to the permanent exhibition at the Lobkowicz Palace in the Prague Castle.
These extraordinary works were previously on loan to the exhibition “Open the Gates of Paradise. The Benedictines in the Heart of Europe 800–1300” at the Waldstein Riding School in Prague. This unique display of medieval art, which explored the rich spiritual and artistic culture of the Benedictine Order in Central Europe, was attended by nearly 30,000 visitors.
The Reliquary Bust of a Female Saint from Jezeří, dating to 1330–1350, can now be seen again at the Lobkowicz Palace. It was probably part of the St. George's Basilica treasure at Prague Castle. In 1938, it was unexpectedly discovered by Czech art historian V. V. Štech among theatrical props at Jezeří, a Lobkowicz Castle.
The 12th century Processional Cross, a rare piece of Romanesque art decorated in crystal gems and gilded copper, was probably included in the Prague bishops’ treasury and later became part of the Lobkowicz Collections.
The new installation at the Lobkowicz Palace allows visitors for the first time to view details on the Processional Cross and the Reliquary Bust from both sides.
