The current temporary exhibition of the Lobkowicz Library presents a selection of printed music from the collection of Ferdinand Philip, 6th Prince Lobkowicz (1724–1784), whose exquisite musical taste left an important mark in the Lobkowicz Music Archive.
Most printed music acquired in London by Ferdinand Philip comes from the important English music publisher John Walsh (1665/66–1736) and his son, John Walsh the Younger (1709–1766). They focused mainly on continental composers, who were lesser known in England at the time.
At the Lobkowicz Palace, visitors can view a representative edition of church trio sonatas Op. 1 by the famous Roman composer Arcangelo Corelli that John Walsh printed in 1735. It is the first well-known cycle of Corelli’s instrumental music, which also counts among the author’s most frequently performed pieces.
The exhibition also presents a four-volume collection entitled Le Delizie dell Opere. Printed by John Walsh the Younger circa 1750, this work presents a selection of the favourite operatic arias performed at the King’s Theatre in London. We are exhibiting the aria Aurevoi che m’ascoltate, which is a part of Vespasiano (1724), an opera by the Italian composer Attilio Ariosti.
You can visit the exhibition until 1 December 2015.
