DLA Piper helps protect human rights

8.10.2009
Company: DLA Piper Prague LLP

The Prague office of DLA Piper, one of the largest international law firms with dozens of branches worldwide, has teamed up in the Czech Republic with Amnesty International (AI), the international organization promoting respect for human rights. DLA Piper has decided to support AI’s efforts and provides its services to the organization free of charge.

DLA Piper pomáhá chránit lidská práva

In July this year, DLA Piper’s Prague office entered into a framework contract on the provision of legal services with Amnesty International Czech Republic. These services mainly comprise the preparation of legal analyses, research, and opinions on new laws, especially from the perspective of human rights. DLA Piper decided on this collaboration because it believes that important components of any modern law firm should be free legal advice and the desire to help people who need support but cannot afford it.

DLA Piper is also involved in other non-profit projects for the public good. It has spent nearly a year working with the PRO BONO Centre, drawing up analyses of human rights violations (particularly in relation to the Roma minority) and providing legal advice to socially disadvantaged individuals within the scope of the agreed cooperation. DLA Piper’s previous pro bono activities have seen it awarded a certificate for its partnership with the Pro Bono Centre over the first year of its existence. This certificate was awarded to DLA Piper in June this year when Lord Phillips of Sudbury delivered a paper at the Czech Bar Association’s Education and Training Centre in Prague.

DLA Piper is a global provider of legal services, with more than 3,500 lawyers operating in 29 countries. The Czech branch, registered as DLA Piper Prague LLP, entered the market on 1 February 2009. However, the Prague office has been on the market since as long ago as 1992, operating as an organizational unit of the Austrian law firm Weiss-Tessbach. In 2003, there was a merger with the UK-based DLA, followed three years later by a merger with its American division; this gave rise to the global DLA Piper group.
