A total of 73 Czech firms ranked among this year’s 500 firms with the highest revenues in Central and Southeast Europe. The strongest firm from the Czech Republic is ČEZ, which reached third position and overtook Škoda Auto, the Czech leader from last year. According to market capitalisation, ČEZ ranked first and was followed by Polish banks PKO and Pekao. These are the results of the Central Europe TOP 500 ranking by Deloitte.
Despite a year-on-year decrease in sales, the strongest position in the ranking was maintained by petrochemical industry firms Polish PKN Orlen and Hungarian MOL. In addition to ČEZ and Škoda Mladá Boleslav, Czech companies that were among the top 20 firms included RWE Transgas and Agrofert Holding. Last year, there were three Czech firms among the 20 strongest companies and there were 69 companies from the Czech Republic in the CE Top 500.
Owing predominantly to the economic recession, the sales of 78% of the companies decreased year-on-year. The total sales of the Czech companies in the ranking amounted to EUR 87.3 billion, which equals 17% of the total sales (EUR 525.4 billion) of all 500 firms.
In terms of individual industries, the Czech financial sector was the most successful. ČSOB ranked third among banks, while Česká spořitelna ranked fourth and Komerční banka ranked sixth. In the insurance sector, Česká pojišťovna ranked second, followed by Kooperativa pojišťovna. Czech construction companies also took good positions: Metrostav (second position), Skanska (third position) and Eurovia CS (fourth position). The car maker Škoda is the Czech leader in the manufacturing sector. Among the firms from the telecommunication, media and technologies industry, the third position was taken by the electronics producer Foxconn, which ranked 22nd in the overall ranking.
