PRAGUE, June 22nd – Citibank’s employees celebrated the bank’s 200th anniversary by participating in the seventh annual Citi Global Community Day. Citibank gathered more than 100,000 volunteers – employees and their family members and friends. Regardless of their rank, the banking group’s employees helped in local communities with environmental protection, day-to-day operation of non-profit organizations, revitalization of parks and buildings, students’ education, and they also spent quality time with disadvantaged children and seniors.
“For two centuries, Citi colleagues have worked to enable economic progress and support our clients on their journey from ambition to achievement, helping those in need since 1812,” commented Vikram Pandit, Citi CEO. “There is no better way to celebrate our 200th anniversary than by working together to strengthen the communities where we live and work,” he added.
As part of the Citi Global Community Day, Citibank employees in the Czech Republic donated blood, refurbished buildings, revitalized gardens and nature areas. Our employees improved green areas in organizations such as the Brno Zoo, Ostrava Zoo, and worked in bio-nursery of the Association of nature’s friends – Čmelák. With the Lékořice volunteer center Citibank’s employees helped to refurbish a gym in the Thomayer Hospital in Prague. At the Federation of Parents and Friends of Deaf and Hard of Hearing we carried out maintenance work on the building and in the garden and also prepared various activities for children. Citi employees also helped disabled people at the sheltered workshops of IZAP – Civic Association for the Integration of Healthy and Disabled Children and Young People in Zlín, Arkádie Teplice and D.R.A.K. Liberec. Volunteers from Citibank Europe plc accompanied children from the children’s home in Bystřice pod Hostýnem on a hiking trip and also hosted students from Junior Achievement, an international educational non-profit organization, who spent a day at the bank and learned more about bank’s operation.
“Encouraging corporate social responsibility initiatives has been one of our long-term priorities. Celebrating our 200th anniversary, we want to share our joy with our community, and so we decided to merge our annual Global Community Day with the celebration of Citi’s bicentennial this year,” said Shahmir Khaliq, managing director, Citibank Europe plc in the Czech Republic. “This is definitely not our only project this year. Citi Foundation continues to promote financial literacy of the Czech public, and Citibank’s Staff Charitable Fund focuses on helping the disabled people and children as well as underprivileged groups,” he added.
The Citi Global Community Day was held in 92 countries around the world. It gave the employees of the banking group an opportunity to join charitable projects in Africa, Asia, South America, and the United States. More than 100,000 employees lent a helping hand, supporting some 1,300 non-profit projects.
