Commentary of Frank Voskeuil, Senior Manager, Specialist Risk Management of KPMG Netherlands, on counterfeit alcohol in the Czech Republic:
Alcohol Counterfeit is a widespread problem worldwide. Counterfeiting of original products, however, applies also to other industries that are subject to regulation. We see same experiments also in phamaceutical industry. Counterfeiting, however, has now truly dramatic effects on human lives.
Current situation in the Czech Republic will the most likely cause not only short-term government response in the form of a temporary ban of spirit sales, but in the long run there will certainly be an even greater tightening of regulation. The government will probably seek to establish preventive measures to prevent similar causes in the future. European Union tries to help pharmaceutical indutstry fighting the counterfeiting; starting 2014 strict regulation should be introduced: companies will have to allocate unique code for each drug plata. The same way of fighting counterfeits, sooner or later, spirit producers will have to go.
