7,000 USD Fellowship for a Czech or Slovak National Is Now Available

The University of Pittsburgh is proud to announce the availability of the annual Ruth Crawford Mitchell Fellowship: A Czech or Slovak professional can be awarded $7,000 to conduct research at the University during the 2013 Fall Term (Aug-Dec). The application deadline is March 30, 2013. The Program is called after the various nationality rooms to be found in Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning. The Czechoslovak Room was designed by Bohumil Slama and inaugurated in 1939.

The Fellowship is offered by the Nationality Rooms Program. The Program is called after the various nationality rooms to be found in Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning. On the picture: The Czechoslovak Room designed by Bohumil Slama, inaugurated in 1939.

Who is eligible for the Fellowship?
• Professionals from the fields of economics, political science, education, medicine, nursing, business, public administration, sociology, or other professions who will be conducting research in their sector are eligible to apply. The research should contribute to the advancement of their field in their respective countries.
• Those applying must be from the Czech or Slovak Republic. (The award is not intended for Pitt alumni but they are not excluded from applying. Current students of the University are not eligible.)
• Applications require a reference from a University of Pittsburgh faculty member who will serve as a mentor to the scholar.

Examples of research that previously received the Fellowship:
• Sociologist - survey of changes in inequality and stratification of Slovak immigrants to America after World War II
• Marketing Director - research on Management and administration of non-profit organizations and foundations
• Physician - research advanced methodology and instrumentation for human posture/stability to help disabled people
• Statistician - improve understanding of economic modeling and study the econometrical methods to better analyze complex economic data
• Nurse and faculty - study evidence based nursing and make it part of the curriculum in her university
• Lecturer - comparative study of American family patterns with Slovak/Czech family patterns/ research family policy of the U.S. and their impact on changes in family structures.
