To Celebrate The 238th Birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven (16 December 1770)
Another in the series of events for Members of The Lobkowicz Collections was held at the Lobkowicz Palace on a snowy evening, 12 December 2008. Members from all levels of sponsorship were invited after-hours to the museum’s Concert Hall to hear a recital by two distinguished Czech pianists, Martin Fila and Marcel Javorček. The programme included movements from symphonies dedicated by Beethoven to Joseph František Maximilian, 7th Prince Lobkowicz, and arranged for piano 4-hands. Afterwards William Lobkowicz led a toast to the Maestro – the new Lobkowicz St. Martin’s red wine was served - and Members were able to do some Holiday shopping in the museum shop.
This dramatic room in the Lobkowicz Palace, Prague, was formerly referred to as “The Imperial Hall”, a general name for grand spaces in palaces of the nobility that linked current occupants to the imperial institutions of Antiquity. The Imperial Hall in the Lobkowicz Palace was the first to be built in Bohemia after the Battle of the White Mountain (1620) which signaled the end of the Thirty Years’ War and a significant rise in the prestige of the Lobkowicz family. It was built by Václav Eusebius, 2nd Prince Lobkowicz, during the Baroque reconstruction of the palace carried out by Carl Lurago. The elaborate wall paintings are by Václav Harovnik.
For the third year Advent festivities were held at Nelahozeves Castle on 29th and 30th November. These included local vendors selling traditional handmade Christmas products, tours of the castle exhibition by guides in period costumes, Advent concerts and various Christmas workshops. Seasonal specialities from the Castle Restaurant were also available in the courtyard and the castle cellars, including a tasting of award-winning Lobkowicz wines. Visitors were also able to shop the elegant Museum Shop for holiday bargains and gifts.
