To switch from a car to a bike is what thousands of employees around the Czech Republic will choose during the month of May. Bike to work competition will be organized in eleven cities: Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Plzen, Liberec, Usti nad Labem, Pardubice, Jihlava, Jablonec nad Nisou, Uherske Hradiste and Olomouc. Even outside of the organized cities anybody can join. The only rule for entry is to have a team between two to five members. Initiative is supported by Vodafone.
Prizes will be awarded in the categories of teams and individuals, where regularity and total distance will be decisive. Companies compete who has the most bike friendly facilities; the winner is the “Bicycle-employer of the year.”
“Last year four cities organized the competition, in which over 2500 employees from 829 businesses and institutions took place. Given that the number of cities has tripled, we expect a much larger number this year,” says Iva Neveceralova, a manager of the campaign at Auto*Mat, a non-profit civic association.
The goal of the Bike to work campaign is to show people that a travel to work does not have to involve waiting in a heavy traffic or in a crowded tram. “If you commute on a bike, you freshen up your head in the morning and arrive to work filled with energy. On top of that you add your personal contribution to lowering the carbon footprint and your city’s environment,” adds Iva.
In today’s Czech Republic a bike is perceived as a favorite sports activity. A long term aim of Auto*Mat is that more people would commute to work using a combination of walking, biking and public transport. These means of transportation respect the environment and the people living in it.
