The Prague Marriott hotel was awarded Best European Energy Service Project in the Lighting Sector for the pioneering work in bringing energy performance contracting to the hotel sector – a sector which has significant potential use of its high energy consumption. Mrs. Fiona Hall, Member of the European Parliament, presented the award during the ceremony which took place in the context of the European Union Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels.
The Berliner Energieagentur GmbH (Germany) has awarded the European Energy Service Award (EESA) since 2005. Winners are projects, institutions, and persons that implement or promote successful energy efficiency measures through energy services.
The award aims to increase awareness about energy services and push forward new instruments for applied energy efficiency and to contribute to their market development in Europe.
At the Prague Marriott, this major project was conducted in cooperation with SEVEn, Energy Efficiency Center and it presented a replacement of hundreds of light sources in rooms, corridors, restaurants, kitchen, entrance hall and conference rooms. Some lights were replaced with LED lamps, saving up to 90% electricity, and prolonging the lifetime of bulbs by a factor of ten. All other lights in the rooms and corridors had already been replaced with compact fluorescent light bulbs, saving 80% energy and with a lifetime 15 times longer than traditional bulbs. Investment into new light sources means a lower demand for replacement light sources, significantly lower energy bills, and most importantly, annual savings of some 427 tons of CO2 emissions through lower energy consumption.
The hotel has also implemented a wide range of environmentally conscious measures, such as choosing an electricity program taking 75% of its energy from renewable sources, implementing induction units in the kitchen, recycling, reducing chemical and water consumption, and many others.
