Interview with Laura Macmillan – The Spa Manager at Mandarin Oriental, Prague.
How long have you been in the spa industry, and how long have you been the Spa Manager in Prague?
I qualified as a Holistic and Sports Massage Therapist back in 2002 when I started working as a Therapist for an exclusive Health Farm in North London as well as working free-lance and in my spare time volunteering holistic service for a local cancer day hospice.
After 2 years I moved to one of the Starwood properties ‘Westin Turnberry Golf & Spa Resort’ in Scotland as a Senior ESPA Therapist. I also studied Management and Phycology with the intent to move more into the Operational side of the business.
After my studies I started working at ‘The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, London’ as a Spa Concierge and progressed to Guest Relations Coordinator. After 3 ½ years I had the opportunity to open the 10,000sq.ft Leisure Facilities for the Residents at One Hyde Park: The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, London.
I decided after 6 ½ years working for Mandarin Oriental, London it was time for a change, so in January 2014 I find myself here in the Czech Republic, I would say in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe!
What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of being the Spa Manager here?
One of the most rewarding I would have to say is the satisfaction of having built a fantastic team. The other is the relationships I have built with local businesses and clientele. This is a part of the job I thoroughly enjoy.
The challenging side has been adapting to the new surroundings and the speed at which things are done here in Prague. However I am becoming accustomed to this!
Can you describe the Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Prague and what makes it different from the others?
Having the Spa situated in a 14th century Renaissance Chapel is way up there. I must say, albeit bias, it is absolutely stunning. Who could have thought of a more perfect location for a Spa! The exceptional service we provide is hard to beat. It is not just about the treatment, guests spending time with us here experience a whole Spa journey. From the moment you call our highly trained Spa Concierge Team who are able to provide sound advice on our treatments and services to your arrival where you change your footwear for slippers while enjoying a seasonal herbal tea and signature scented towel.
The experience from start to finish is tailor made to suit your needs and along with such professionalism, attention to detail and sensitivity you are made to feel totally pampered.
What is your signature treatment for the autumn season, and what products do you use?
Our new Signature Treatment launched on 1st October 2014 is ‘Inner Strength’. This nurturing 120 minute treatment incorporates a variety of soothing massage and breathing techniques to ease physical tension and emotional anxiety. Inner Strength oil is used throughout the treatment with its powerful blend of ingredients including healing rose and frankincense for focus and clarity, cardamom and geranium which helps to emotionally balance the mind. The best part of this unique event is that 10% of the price from every treatment or Inner Strength Oil purchase is donated to the local cancer charity ‘Rakovina věc veřejná’. I know, from my experience while working with cancer patients, just how important it is to stay balanced during such difficult time of a person’s life. We are very privileged to be able to offer our services and support to those affected by the disease.
What is your personal wellness motto?
You must always make time!
