A monthly roundup of US news about accounting and auditing matters Issue 09 | September 2014.
One of the takeaways in September 2014 is the announcement by the SEC of the largest-ever whistleblower award of more
than $30 million awarded to a whistleblower (a foreign resident) who provided key original information that led to a successful
SEC enforcement action. In reaching the award determination, the SEC considered the significance of the information provided
by Claimant, the assistance that Claimant provided, and the law- enforcement interests at issue. According to the SEC, this
whistleblower program has an international breadth and reach.
Therefore, as auditors, we should be mindful of the SEC’s whistleblower program as well as the Foreign Corrupt Practices
Act (FCPA).
Take care.
