Veeam's visions for the next 10 years

18.10.2016
Company: Amcham

The first 10 years have been amazing for Veeam but what about the next 10? I’ve been thinking on this a lot and while no prediction is ever perfect, here’s where I think the next 10 years will take us…

  1. Cloud – Yes it’s vague to just say ‘cloud’, but there are so many different clouds and data needs to be available no matter where it sits. Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 (due out later this year) is our first foray into availability for Software as a Service (SaaS). I believe that because of the growing popularity of SaaS we’ll see more offerings targeting SaaS. In terms of public cloud, we at Veeam have always been a channel company and our Veeam Cloud and Service Provider (VCSP) partners are no different. We’ll be working on ways to help companies embrace the public cloud while still working with our VCSP partners.
  1. Services – The days of just “box mover” value-added resellers (VARs) is coming to a close. VARs that aren’t embracing the services model for their customers will soon see those customers going to someone who does. We’ve already released several products to help our VARs embrace services and you’ll see many more in the coming years.
  1. Subscription pricing – While Veeam isn’t dropping per-socket, perpetual licensing for the Veeam Availability Suite anytime soon, we have announced that new products will be on a subscription basis and most of them per-VM or per-workload. This is the model most software companies are using today and it has advantages for the customers, partners and Veeam. Of course the transition won’t happen overnight as there are a number of details that need to be worked out, including partner incentives but in 10 years I highly doubt Veeam will have any perpetual licenses.
  1. Multiple Clouds – just like companies that maintain multiple datacenters today for DR purposes, as the data moves to the cloud, one cloud won’t be enough. The true hybrid cloud is a mix of on-prem, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). New technologies will emerge that will make it easier to maintain the same data across multiple clouds so that all your eggs aren’t in one basket.
  1. New ways to access data – just like the “smartphone” and tablet market which barely existed 10 years ago, the next 10 years will see great advances in how we access data. The rise of artificial intelligence, speech recognition, digital assistants and even virtual reality will dramatically change how and when we consume data. The Internet of Things is just now starting to take off and it’s going to be exciting to see where it takes us.
